What are Essential Fatty Acids?

What are essential fatty acids? They are essential elements the body cannot produce but needs to perform it’s metabolic processes. With a proper diet, we get them from the foods we eat.

Citizens around the world are learning about the health factors of the essential fatty acids called omega 3’s and omega 6’s. Both are necessary for health. Most of us get more omega 6’s than needed from our modern junk food diets.

One major illness factor is the over consumption of Omega 6’s as we all consume from 10 to 20 times to much vegetable oil in our cooked and pre-packaged foods.

Omega 6’s are in all our fried foods and baked goods. Just read the labels and look for vegetable oils.

Unfortunately, at the same time we under-consume the Omega 3’s to balance them out. Our bodies don’t produce omega 3’s. They come from foods like raw walnuts, fish and raw pumpkin seeds. These are some of the good fats our body needs.

Our bodies were made to eat foods in moderation. When we mess that up like we have in America by going away from whole foods to eating processed foods we get sick. The illness symptoms are then labeled one by one as a disease by our doctors.

Many of us have several of these illnesses occurring at the same time. Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure seem to come in pairs.

Even the FDA was asking what are essential fatty acids? This was because they were getting petitioned by many companies to allow positive health claims to be associated with products containing omega 3’s. After their investigation the FDA agreed.
www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/news/2004/NEW01115.html show allowable health claims for Omega 3 essential fatty acids.

This out of balance condition of omega 3’s can be a contributing factor to inflammation. Did you know that inflammation is a factor in the following diseases:

• Acid Reflux
• A.D.H.D
• Allergies
• Alzheimer's
• Anemia
• Anxiety
• Arthritis
• Arteriosclerosis
• Asthma
• Bursitis
• Chronic Pain
• Colitis - Ulcerative
• Congestive heart failure
• Crohn's Disease
• Depression
• Diabetes
• Fatigue
• Fibramyalgia
• Fibrosis
• Gout
• Heart Disease
• High Cholesterol
• High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
• Joint Pain
• Lupus
• Menstrual Pain
• Multiple Sclerosis
• Obesity/Overweight
• Periodontal Disease

This is by no means a complete list as I could go on for pages.

The easy way to get the omega 3’s you need is through quality omega 3 fish oil supplements. Be careful they are not all the same.
