Positive Effects of Laughter
The positive effects of laughter for healing became real after Norman Cousins amazing recovery of his health in the 1960’s. After becoming ill he read a book called: The Stress of Life. He hypothesized that since negative emotions were bad for your health, then positive emotions would be beneficial.
He hired a nurse to read him funny stories, play Marx brothers and Laurel and Hardy movies. This gave him the healing effects of laughter which did lead to his recovery. Within a short period of time he was able to go off painkillers, sleeping pills and medicines.
By 1989 an article entitled "Laugh If This Is a Joke." in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) agreed that laughter therapy could improve the quality of life for patients with chronic illnesses. The positive effects of laughter are relief or improvement of the symptoms of disease.
Proverbs 17:22 written thousands of years ago states “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Our bodies were created to be self-repairing. We mess them up when we allow stress, gloom and doom and other negative emotions in.
Laughter is the natural stress reliever. Laughter is a healthy form of exercise for the body and the soul. Norman Cousins discovered that 10 minutes of hearty belly laughs could give him 2 hours of pain free sleep. Hearty laughter is also supposed to be a good work out for the heart and stimulation for good blood circulation.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said “To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children...to leave the world a better place...to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”
