Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

What are the causes of erectile dysfunction or ED? This is when a man loses the function of getting, and maintaining an erection for natural intercourse. It may be continuing, or an occasional problem. ED can also cause a lack of sexual desire. About half the men who have ED, only have problems occasionally.

Usually impotence is caused by psychological, or physical problems. Sometimes medication taken for high blood pressure, antidepressants, painkillers, alcohol, nicotine marijuana and other drugs can cause impotence.

About 80% of men over age 75 experience problems. It is fairly common with diabetics. Plaque build up in the arteries and veins can also be a cause.

Diabetes and erectile dysfunction seem to happen about the same time. Getting diabetes is bad enough but having erectile problems, as well, doesn’t do much for a man’s ego, or for a couple’s marital bliss.

This is an example of the spouse suffering along with the diabetic. From 35% to 75% of male diabetics may have this problem. Men usually do not want to talk about the problem. The sexual act can become stressful for men with this condition.

Many diabetics have a problem with decreased blood flow to their extremities. This may be due to the damage sustained by our blood vessels and nerves from excess sugars and excess insulin. This could also explain the high blood pressure problems of diabetics. Smoking is a factor that can increase high blood pressure and blood vessel damages leading to impotence.

The blood vessels that cause erection may not be relaxing correctly. The various medications and herbal treatments for erectile problems focus on stimulating nitric oxide which causes the blood vessels in the genital area to relax. This allows the blood flow to facilitate an erection.

While many diabetics have found the various drugs like Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra to be effective the are not a guaranteed solution. What tempers the use of these drugs are the potential side effects.

In some cases testosterone treatments can help. Some have found various supplements like L-arginine, Horny goat weed, Yohimbe, and Ginkgo Biloba to be helpful. There are hundreds of supplements that claim to combat ED. It is buyer beware when shopping for these supplements.

Erectile Dysfunction may be helped by quitting smoking, cutting out alcohol, discontinuing recreational drugs and losing weight.
